Know what to eat and when to eat it
If you really want to burn off that stubborn belly fat and get into the best possible shape, there are some incredibly simple rules you can follow every day that will make a world of difference to all your weight-loss efforts. Because these superbly healthy, nutrient-rich foods are ultra-low in calories but full of natural goodness and they really help you to feel full. Be careful with sauces and dressings because that’s where the hidden sugars and calories are lurking.

And what about timing? Most nutritionists advise us to have a good breakfast every day and get the day off to the best possible start. Some say that this is the most important meal of the day and, if you’re one of the many individuals who are too rushed or too busy to have a good breakfast, now is the time to introduce this excellent nutritional habit into your daily routine.

You also need to make time for lunch, aiming whenever possible for natural produce. Dinner should always be light.

The more natural your food choices, the better your body will like it. The aim is to help your body to function naturally and with maximum efficiency. Simple rules that can lead to spectacular results.

Take the right supplements to boost energy, mood and metabolism

Are you one of the growing band of healthy individuals who boost their daily wellbeing with supplements? Congratulations! Because when you take the right supplements in the right quantities, you can make a great deal of difference to your total health and wellbeing.

Especially when you consider that so much of our food is often lacking in the essential phyto nutrients that occur naturally when plants are allowed to grow the way Nature intended. It’s a serious issue because so much of our food is processed that a lot of the natural goodness is simply missing. That’s where supplements can make a world of difference.

Not only can they help to boost our digestion and bolster our immune system, but they can help to overcome the harmful effects of pollution and background toxicity that are the plague of modern, industrialised society. Supplements give our bodies a fighting chance to resist the harmful effects of those toxic chemicals that are in our homes, in the air we breathe and in the food we consume. The right combination of supplements can reverse much of the damage that we experience from environmental pollution.

Perhaps some of the most important supplements are the naturally occurring anti-oxidants that can purge free radicals from our systems and reduce the risk of disease and infection. The latest research in Epigenetics has even shown that certain supplements can switch off specific genes that trigger disease in the first in the first place.

Most people certainly benefit from a consultation with a qualified nutritionist to determine what kind of supplements are appropriate for their health profile. It is always advisable to talk first with your regular health professional before embarking on any course of nutritional supplements. This is particularly relevant when you’re taking prescription medications because of the way some supplements can react with your medicinal drugs. Talk to your doctor first and that will help you to determine what is appropriate for you.

Do effective exercise

You’ve got to move it or lose it – and we’re talking about your body here and about your health in particular. Humans evolved to move. The fact is that the more we spend our days hunched and bunched in front of a computer or a TV screen, the more we compromise our health and wellbeing. It just isn’t natural for us to spend so much time sitting. The problems show up in our necks and shoulders, in our back muscles and spines, in our hips and pelvis, in our knees and ankles.

To make matters worse, we don’t breathe properly either. We don’t oxygenate our bodies. The results are too obvious to mention but the overall effect is a severe reduction in the quality of our lives. So, we need to move. If you don’t have the time or the inclination to hit the gym and organise a worthwhile workout during the week, you can at least make sure you walk more often. This low-impact approach to exercise can get your body moving and get you started on the road to fitness. You don’t any special equipment and you can easily fit in a short walk during the day.

The emphasis in most gyms today though seems to focus on building muscle and developing stamina. These are both worthy objectives yet the most important factor of all is your ability to develop your natural levels of flexibility. That might come as a surprise yet suppleness is the key to maintaining your body’s long-term ability to move, to avoid pain and injury and to allow for natural movement that lends itself to lifelong exercise.

That’s why the ancient discipline of Yoga and the more modern interpretation of Pilates have proved so effective in helping people to discover their real potential for natural strength and flexibility. Once you are able to move more freely and comfortably, exercise becomes much easier to perform and the benefits happily start to show up in every aspect of your life.

Learn to manage your stress

Are you stressed? Do you experience tension in your body, in your joints and muscles? Do you find it difficult to relax and switch off? It seems that pretty much everyone is suffering from some form of stress these days. It’s everywhere! And that’s a problem because we run the risk of becoming so accustomed to feeling stressed that we just get used to it. We begin to accept that it’s completely normal to feel tired and tense, irritable and easily annoyed, helpless and weighed down by the pressures of daily life. But help is at hand. Humans have always been prone to stress, even though the long-term damage to our health and the quality of our lives are the all-too obvious and completely avoidable side effects of living in a constant state of anxiety.

One of the simplest antidotes to stress is to exercise. The movement and increase in oxygen uptake can work wonders for how we feel.

Exercise can trigger the release of endorphins, those wonderful. feel-good chemicals that are the body’s natural reward for moving the body and breaking a sweat. Exercise is a great way to get in touch with our bodies and turn down the stress response. Another alternative is to learn to meditate. This approach can take longer to master and the results need a little time before they show up in force. But the regular practice of meditation calms the mind, slows down heart rate, reduces blood pressure, relaxes the body, enhances the metabolism and brings our hyper-active thoughts to a state of relaxation that is deeply beneficial for our health and wellbeing.

Learning to become aware of your shoulders is another truly fabulous way to help you disarm your stress response. Our shoulders inevitably reflect how we feel. Our emotional state is mirrored in the position of our shoulders. This is incredibly useful because the moment you relax your shoulders, you automatically trigger a chain reaction in your body, lowering blood pressure, flushing adrenaline and cortisol out of your bloodstream, reducing the stress response and allowing yourself to feel calmer and more centred in a matter of minutes. It’s so effective that you can use it any time. If you add a gentle, deeper breath at the same time, you will soon learn to master your old habit of reacting with stress every time a challenging situation shows up. You will become calmer, more creative, more balanced and much more positively relaxed than you ever thought possible. You might even find that your sleep improves dramaticvally too and that’s a bonus that everyone deserves to enjoy every single night!

Take time every day to relax

Do you ever really switch off? Do you ever take the time – outside of your precious vacations! – to really let go and enjoy the peace and serenity of total relaxation? It’s a very important question because most of us never, ever really relax. Even when we think we’re relaxed, our bodies and minds are still holding extraordinary levels of physical and mental stress. This is not good for us. In fact, it’s probably harming us in all kinds of unpleasant ways. So how do we learn to relax?

In ancient times, the techniques of Yoga evolved over many centuries as a perfect method to master the body and the mind. The movements, positions and controlled breathing were developed to bring about a state of profound peace and calm that was recognised as being profoundly beneficial to everyone who practiced the techniques. Whether you’re a fan of Yoga or not, the principles of sitting quietly and simply breathing a little more deeply than usual can help us to let go of the habits of stress that cloud our minds and rob us of the peace we need to function normally.

Relaxation is not sleep. Frankly, most people do not sleep either deeply or well and you can judge the quality of your own night’s rest by the way you feel when you wake up! Learning to run a gentle scan through the length of your body can be very helpful in aiding you to spot the places where you’re holding tension. Tensing muscles and joints and then releasing them completely is a truly ancient method of introducing a deep sense of physical calm.

Breathing gently and a little more deeply than usual introduces a surprisingly relaxing influence to your thoughts. As you learn to relax your body and still your over-active thoughts, you will experience the wonder of a profound sense of relaxation. It can feel so good that you will want to experience it every day and every night. This is completely natural and a fully intended benefit of discovering the power of true relaxation.

Exercise every day, making it an automatic part of your routine

Have you noticed how easy it is to make excuses not to exercise? We all set out with the best of intentions, believing that we can get into better shape, lose the love handles, build some muscle and finally be able to jog up those flights of stairs without needing to be revived at the top by an emergency medical crash team! So what goes wrong? The answer’s easy. Habits! Unless we develop the habit of moving our bodies every single day, whether we feel like it or not, the chances are that we’ll soon find a handy excuse not to do the exercise and just avoid making the effort.

That’s why habits are so important in helping us to maintain the right choices in life. When you only have to choose once – choosing to exercise every day, for example – then you simply follow up on the decision automatically every day. You don’t have to face the pressure of a tough call to exercise every day. You make the decision to do whatever you have to do. You make that decision once and it becomes a firm commitment. You go with that decision until it becomes an automatic behaviour. That’s one of the great secrets to developing an effective exercise routine.

It’s no use having a brilliant personal trainer who builds the ultimate exercise programme for you – if you don’t show up to do the work. And that happens far too often. That’s why it’s smarter to opt for a lighter exercise routine that won’t exhaust you and give you the ideal excuse for cutting the daily exercise session. Start gently and build up the intensity slowly. You’ll still get the results you want but you’ll reduce the risk of injury, exhaustion and burn out.

One of the safest and most effective ways to improve your fitness is simply by walking every day. Are you surprised? You don’t need any special equipment, the exercise is free and most people actually enjoy the chance to move their bodies and start to notice their environment. It’s the perfect way to use your creativity, breathe a little more deeply and use the time to see your life and its challenges from a fresh perspective. If you can get out into the countryside and away from the city’s pollution, that’s even better. So, even without a gym membership and an expensive outlay on special clothes and equipment, it’s still posssible to move your body every day and pick up the benefits that flow from the daily application of movement and exercise. It’s your right and you need to exercise that right every single day.

Be kind to yourself

It’s often amazing how people react to this simple injunction to treat ourselves kindly. Most of the time, we do not behave kindly towards ourselves at all. We too often display the deep-rooted habits of judging ourselves negatively and this leads to a damaging loss of self-esteem and a crippling loss of belief in our ability to achieve things. We are, after all, very much the creatures of our beliefs. How we see ourselves and the way we impose our judgments on ourselves – and others – can make the world of difference to how our lives develop. When you renounce the habit of judging yourself, you begin to see yourself in a new light. You might begin to appreciate that you do not have to be perfect. That it’s completely normal to be wrong at times and that’s every single one of us makes mistakes.

We acknowledge that perfection is not the natural human condition. That failure is the frequent sign post on the pathway to success. This can mark the beginning of an extraordinary personal transformation. When you start to accept in your heart and mind that it’s good to be kind to yourself, to nurture and encourage yourself, to recognise the good things that you do and to accept yourself more fully, amazing things begin to happen in your life. You turn down the stress response and you become more adventurous. You no longer fear failure so you’re more willing to try new things. You treat your body more kindly, avoiding the processed junk food and sugary garbage that is so toxic to our health. You feel that you want to live in a body that supports great health and profound wellbeing. You might even take up a regular exercise routine.

Being kind to yourself means avoiding the physical, mental and emotional abuse that we inflict on ourselves. We need to be conscious of how we feel when we think about ourselves. It’s incredibly helpful to pause for a moment and ask whether this is how you really want to feel about yourself. You can learn to dismantie the negative thoughts and feelings and begin to build a stronger, more positive and more affirming set of responses.

These new, positive thoughts and feelings about yourself can quickly become the new habits that define how you see yourself. You develop a kinder, more appreciative perspective of who you are. Is it worthwhile? Try it. The results might easily astonish you.

Conduct healthy relationships – Accept that we all make mistakes

Being kind to yourself means that you need to have positive, healthy and supportive relationships in your life. It’s one of the fundamental principles that supports happiness, fulfilment and long term wellbeing. The way we feel about ourselves frequently shows up in the kind of relationships that we choose for ourselves. The underlying principle is simple enough: if we are not happy with who we are, we will often be drawn to relationships that support that inner unhappiness. Have you noticed how some individuals leave one relationship only to find someone very similar to the person they’ve just left? It happens all the time. We’re creatures of habit and this applies as much to our relationships as it does to any other aspect of our lives. So this is a perfect moment to consider the kind of people that you currently have around you.

Take a moment to consider the five most significant people that you spend your time with. How would you describe them? Are they positive people? Do they encourage you? Or do they make fun of you and pour doubt and negativity on your hopes and dreams? Healthy relationships require openness. Can you be open with the people who form your closest relationships? Or do you have to keep quiet, to pretend and play a role in order to keep the peace?

There are countless examples of manipulative people who get as close to you as possible in order to use you and control you. We’ve probably all met characters who fit that particular description! It certainly takes courage and a measure of determination to be free from these destructive kinds of people but, once you get them out of your life, you can better understand why you tolerated them in the first place. That’s a very important step in making sure that you don’t have to go through the same experience again.

One of the most important questions we can ask about our relationships is to reflect on whether we’re happy in the company of these significant individuals. So, go ahead. Ask yourself how you feel when you’re with these people? If the answer isn’t positive, you might want to consider why you’re spending time with any of these individuals. When you feel better about yourself, you begin to choose your friends and possible partners with a great deal more care. You can afford to choose. You do not have to compromise. True friends, after all, are exceedingly rare in life. If you find one, cherish them. They tend to be irreplaceable.

Feel fulfilled with what you do daily

Life is very much about the choices we make. And life is such a precious gift that is bestowed upon us as a daily opportunity to live very much as we choose. So why would we want to live a life that is unfulfilled and seasoned with disappointment? The answer might be surprising because we sometimes fall prey to the illusion that deep down we just don’t deserve to be happy. That particular illusion needs to be approached with a swinging sledgehammer and rightly shattered. You most certainly do deserve to be happy and fulfilled and that’s why this a great moment for you to take a break and consider how you’re spending the precious currency of your life.

Every moment that passes will never come back. It is both an opportunity and a fleeting reminder that our time is always limited. So let’s make a solid commitment to start living our lives with purpose, with focus and with determination. The starting point for this revolution is to consider what you really want from your life. The most common mistake is to aim for too little, to settle for less than your life truly deserves. And your aims do not have to be solely focused on yourself. You might want to make a difference to the lives of others as well.

The important thing is to recognise that now is the moment for you to decide whether you’re where you want to be, doing what you really want to do. These are big questions. But your life is too important to ignore these essential issues. Whatever your age, whatever your background, let’s stop making excuses and start applying our energy tdirectly owards the things that will bring us the greatest sense of fulfilment. Start right now. Don’t let the doubts and excuses get in the way. Do you want to wake up with a smile on your face and a tingle of excitement at the adventure that awaits you?

Finding fulfilment and making a difference are the underlying sources of great satisfaction and enormous motivation in this world. Take a breath and stop to consider what you’d really love to do that would make every day a joy to experience. Find your dream. Find your pathway and start living the kind of life that brings you the greatest possible happiness. Because the clock is ticking and you don’t have forever to get started!

Develop inner peace

One of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves is the priceless jewel of serenity, the inner calm that helps us to remain beautifully detached from the swirling turmoil of distractions that fill up the days of our lives. It sounds like a truly fabulous attribute to cultivate but where do we start? The first step is to learn to release all the accumulated stress from our bodies and exercise can certainly help to reduce the physical impact of stress but we need to go deeper. We need to identify all the places in our joints and muscles and tendons where we have stored our stresses and tensions. In the ancient traditions of Yoga, it is customary to start with the feet and tense the toes as tightly as we can before releasing them completely. Then we repeat the same tensing and releasing in every joint and muscle group throughout the body. This powerful and deliberate release of tension can work wonders for calming us down. At the same time, we need to breathe a little more deeply than usual but still aim to make every breath both calm and natural, effortless and free of all stress. In this way, we learn to disengage all the tension from the body and then the deeper breathing helps us to calm our thoughts. This is the beginning of meditation, allowing us to consider our thoughts and feelings with objective detachment until they lose their power to drive us like leaves lost in the grip of a strong wind. We become calmer. We become more balanced. We begin to feel centered. In these moments, we may gain insights into the way we live our lives.

We may see alternatives that we’d missed or failed to consider. Gradually we can bring all the different aspects of our life into harmony so that what we say, what we feel, what we think and what we do all flow naturally from the same source. This deeper sense of harmony in our lives is the foundation of great inner peace and when life’s storms and tribulations flare up, we remain calm and centered and deal with life’s inevitable challenges in a more balanced and creative way. This is the source of inner peace. This is the most natural way for human beings to express themselves and deal with whatever occurs. It is exceedingly rare but all the more precious because it within the grasp and potential of each of us to discover this priceless gift for ourselves.

How to Boost YOUR Immune System

Your immune system is your best friend when you want to help protect your body against colds, influenza and other common illnesses that often strike young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. Keep in mind, if you don’t eat well and exercise, you might as well consider yourself compromised.

Don’t worry about labeling yourself; that isn’t important. It is more important you understand the steps you have to take to lead a healthier and cleaner life. Here is how you do that.

Step 1: Wash Your Hands
It’s no joke. The first step is the easiest step to follow, and you may feel like rolling your eyes.

However, the #1 way people get sick is by hand-to-hand contact. You may shake the hand of someone that is ill and forget to wash your hands before you eat your midday snack.

You may hold your child’s hand while going to the park, play on the equipment (which may contain several hundred different kinds of viruses or bacteria) and then sit down for a picnic without washing your hands.

These are bad habits, very bad habits. These are the kind of habits that will cause you to become ill. You and every member of your family should always wash your hands, especially if someone in the house is sick. Here are some times where it is critical for you to wash your hands.

Any time you go out of doors and return home. This is especially true if you go to crowded places.

Any time you and/or your children go to the park. If you want to have a picnic and there is nowhere handy to wash hands, then pass around some moist towlettes. You can find these almost anywhere. These are great for use when on-the-go. Another new invention is miniature bottles of sanitizer. You can buy pocket sized sanitizer and give one to each member of the family. You just squirt a tiny bit in your palms and rub them clean, no water or rinsing required. Some even come with built in lotion or aloe to promote softness for your hands during cold winter months.

When you go out to eat. Any time you decide to go out to eat you should wash your hands before you eat your food. Again, this is an environment where you can easily use a moist towel or take a trip to the restroom to clean up before you eat.

When caring for a loved one that is ill. Sometimes while caring for the people we love most, we forget how important it is to care for ourselves. However, you can spread illness by caring for someone and then touching another person if you do not wash your hands.

When handling pets or pet material. Pets are lovely to have, but they often harbor many diseases. Make sure you wash your hands after touching the family dog.

Before planning and preparing meals. You should always wash your hands before and after handling food products you plan to eat or to serve others. If you are ill you may contaminate everyone else in the household. Be especially careful when preparing foods that have a meat and a vegetable part. Raw meat may harbor many diseases including salmonella or E. coli to name a few. Make sure you do not use the same cutting board when preparing vegetables compared with meats. Each should have its own special cutting board.

Step 2 – Eat Immune Boosting Foods
There are many immune boosting foods anyone can eat. These foods will not cure a cold immediately, but they may prepare your body to fight harder against diseases.

Most people know that fruits, whole grains and vegetables top the list of must eat items. Some people believe that chicken soup makes you well when you are sick.

Other people still live by the old adage “starve a cold and feed a fever.” So what should you eat? Here is a list of the foods that are most likely to result in better health. These foods have proven beneficial for bolstering one’s overall wellness, which in turn may help boost the odds you will be able to fight infection or viruses if they attack.

Fish or Flax – these foods provide essential fatty acids, which are tiny substances that are wonderful for reducing inflammation in the body, a common cause for illness. While you can take a supplement containing Omega-3 fatty acids (a key essential fatty acid) you can also get essential fatty acids from your diet. Some good sources of fatty acids in food include fatty fishes like tuna, salmon and mackerel.

Yogurt – yogurt contains ingredients called probiotics that help balance the flora in the digestive tract. When the flora in the body becomes uncontrolled, diseases like yeast infections or UTI become common.

Mushrooms – Eastern medical practitioners often use Shitake mushrooms to bolster the immune system. Most mushrooms contain vitamin B and many other essential nutrients. You will benefit whether you eat the Shitake variety or any other variety, as long as you incorporate them into an overall healthy diet.

Fresh fruits – especially blueberries, strawberries and bananas, all of which contain powerful ingredients to bolster the immune system and help the body fight back against disease. Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries contain many antioxidants; theses are substances that reduce free radical damage. Free radical damage is damage that occurs on the surface of an object. Free radical damage can occur from too much unprotected exposure to the sun or other environmental pollutants. Bananas contain plenty of potassium, which helps balance the electrolytes in your body.

Seaweed – some believe seaweed (often used in Eastern dishes like sushi) contains ingredients that bolster the action of T cells in the body; these are disease fighting cells. Seaweed may also cause the body to produce more antibodies, which are a type of white blood cell that helps fight disease and infection.

Herbs – herbs are powerful substances anyone can use to flavor dishes and combat disease. There are certain herbs like cumin, cayenne and cilantro that may help bolster circulation and improve one’s immunity. This is especially true of cayenne, which heats the body. Some believe cayenne may help increase the metabolism also, which is why it is an ingredient in many natural health supplements promoting weight loss benefits.

Green Tea – this tea, like many other teas, is a powerhouse of antioxidants. Black tea also contains many beneficial antioxidants, but studies suggest green tea is best. You can buy it decaf or caffeinated. Green tea is often used in weight loss products because many believe it stimulates the metabolic system. The antioxidants in the tea may help ward off infection or illness. Sipping tea with a bit of honey and lemon while sick can soothe an itchy, red or sore throat.

Water – it may sound crazy, but many people mistake thirst for hunger and overeat. Water, pure, filtered and clean water is one of the best substances you can drink if you want to stay well or get better faster. Water hydrates the body. Most people, especially those living in dry climates, do not drink enough water. Water is essential for every biological process that occurs in the body. Water helps the digestive system work properly.

It helps your skin feel healthy and it helps your body recover from illness. If you don’t like the taste of water there are many products now promoting water with added flavors you can try. Just be sure you don’t indulge in one that has a lot of calories, or you will pack on pounds. If you are dehydrated however, some people find an electrolyte enhanced drink like Gatorade or similar products help replenish the system. You can even drink some water with a pinch of sea salt and lemon to help balance the electrolytes in your body.

Garlic and Onion – fresh garlic has many immune boosting properties, whether you take it as a supplement or as a whole food. If you get fresh garlic and fry it or add it to favorite foods including sauces, you will give your immune system a power boost. Garlic has antifungal, antibacterial and energy boosting qualities. When combined with onion in light broth, many people find it helps relieve sinus congestion or lessens the amount of time they suffer from a cold. When in doubt, always go for the garlic, and take a breath freshener with you while out and about.

Oats and Barley – These are whole grains containing loads of a healthy fiber that contains antioxidants and antimicrobial ingredients. Many feel oats and barley are more beneficial then Echinacea. Some studies suggest oats and barley may be helpful with people with compromised immune systems, or those that are susceptible to the flue and similar illnesses.

This list is far from comprehensive, but it does give you an idea of the types of foods you can eat that are most likely to result in better health. You should think about eating whole foods rather than processed or packaged foods, as many processed foods (even if fortified with vitamins) contain too much fat and too many preservatives.

Whole foods include foods that are in their whole state; they are natural, minimally processed and good for you. You can find grains, vegetables and lean proteins that are whole foods. Look for meat that does not contain much in the way of antibiotics. Many meats processed by traditional stores are laden with hormones to help the cows providing the meat and milk to grow.

These hormones do not disappear; so, if you feed your child whole milk that has been pasteurized and comes from a cow that feeds on antibiotics or growth hormones, your child may ingest the same hormones. Some researchers believe this is one reason why so many young adolescents are hitting puberty much earlier in life.

Step 3 – Take Your Vitamins & Supplements
Eating well is critical to your health; so is taking the right vitamins and supplements. During various stages of our life we all need a little extra pizzazz. You should always talk with your healthcare provider before you use any over-the-counter supplement.

This is especially true if you take prescription medications regularly, because some supplements or vitamins may negatively interact with each other. Some supplements may reduce or increase the side effects of prescription medications, as can some foods. So be sure you talk to your doctor before you try any of these.

A qualified healthcare provider can also guide you by telling you how much of a vitamin or supplement you need to take to realize better help or to bolster your immune system.

Below is a list of some of the more common supplements recommended to people for boosting the immune system.

Probiotics – Sometimes referred to as “acidophilus” or other related substances, probiotics help balance the natural flora or good bacteria that resides in the body. Often when someone takes antibiotics, the antibiotic kills off all bacteria in the body, both good and bad. Unfortunately, good bacteria are needed for proper digestion and elimination. Some studies suggest the use of probiotics in children and in adults may reduce digestive disease risk, improve immunity to common ailments and may even reduce the number of infectious diseases that cause fever in people that take them regularly[i].

Omega-3 fatty acid – a supplement containing omega-3 like fish oil or flax seed oil can improve your overall health and wellness. Essential fatty acids like this also help reduce inflammation in the body. Often doctors recommend patients with arthritis or related illnesses take an anti-inflammatory agent like essential fatty acids.

Vitamin C – vitamin C is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get your daily serving of immune boosting ingredients. There is much controversy in the health community about how much vitamin C is enough vitamin C to protect the body. One way to gauge this is to take one tablet a day ,and increase your dose until you feel abdominal discomfort. However, this may not work for all people. It is best you speak with your healthcare professional about the proper dose of vitamin C for you based on your health and body weight.

Echinacea – this herb has been promoted as a virtual panacea for all ailments. If taken regularly during a cold it may help reduce the length or severity of a cold. You can buy it as an herb or in capsule and tincture formulations. Most healthcare providers recommend you do not take this year ‘round, because it may lose its ability to fight disease if taken daily. If you are ill, you might consider taking it for a week and then taking a week off to see how well you do. Studies about Echinacea are controversial; some people swear by its effectiveness and others doubt it helps at all. Keep in mind all bodies are different. If you take it and it seems to help, then use it. If you find it doesn’t then try something else.

Goldenseal – this is a powerful herb that you should use with caution. Manufacturers note it has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It can cause digestive upset, and should not be taken during pregnancy as it can promote contractions or early labor. Goldenseal is a species that is dying out, so it is important to take it when needed, and to only take as much as you need to feel well. A trained herbalist can work with you to find out what the best dose is for your body type.

Zinc – many people have zinc deficiencies which may cause fatigue and lethargy. Many cold formulas at stores now offer zinc as a primary ingredient. This is true of many tablets used to soothe a sore throat. It is sometimes difficult to get enough zinc from the food you eat, so if you are sick you may find it helps to take a little extra zinc. Often you can find a zinc lozenge.

If you want to learn more about supplements and herbs that may help bolster your immune system you should consider finding a qualified natural healthcare provider or consult with an herbalist before you buy anything.

You will find there are many other supplements on the market that claim they boost health and wellness. Some of these contain a mixture of ingredients or herbs and natural vitamins and minerals. Before you buy a supplement after hours of searching the shelves of a health food store, talk to a qualified herbalist or other health care practitioner. He or she can help you decide what, if any, supplement will help you best as you try to overcome your illness. Only someone that is qualified and understands basic anatomy and physiology, and the drug interactions likely to occur when someone takes an herb with a medication, can really assist you as you try to find the best immunity formula to suit your needs.

You can also ask what herbs you can use or foods you can use to help prevent disease (like shitake mushrooms and seaweed). Some foods and supplements (including garlic) are sometimes better taken as a preventive medicine than as a cure for any illness.

Speaking of garlic, you may also consider adding more garlic to your diet, whether in the form of a capsule or raw garlic. Garlic acts in much the same way that goldenseal does; many consider it natures natural antibiotic. Just be careful not to eat too much at once because it may upset your stomach.

Many newer supplements containing garlic are now odorless and tasteless, so you don’t have to worry about scaring off the vampires with your garlic perfume, if you will.

Now that you have an idea of what types of supplements you can take to improve your immunity, let’s look at the next two steps you can take to help your immune system punch out disease. Are you ready?

Gentle motions performed through Tai Chi, Yoga or a practice called Qigong (another type of Eastern exercise involving low-impact movement of energy) are sometimes more helpful for boosting immunity that vigorous exercise, which may actually increase the stress hormones circulating in your system. Gentle motion exercises as these are helpful for providing your body with more energy, which means you have more ability to fight off infection and feel your best. You can enjoy these exercises as much or as little as you want.

You can visualize disease or a chronic illness any way you want; the goal is to focus on getting rid of the cells responsible for your sickness or the virus and bacteria responsible for your lethargy. You can also perform visualizations where you imagine what your body would look like in a healthy state. You can imagine your perfect body, and then imagine you accomplishing any task you want with your perfect body. Many people with strong immune systems imagine their body is healthy whether it is or not.

Your subconscious can “trick” your brain into thinking you are healthy even if you are not healthy. It sounds strange, but it can happen. Doctors are using visualization techniques in hospitals to help patients recover faster. There are even studies suggesting visualization helps improve medical health and outcomes among patients with chronic illnesses.

It is really a matter of mind over matter – in a literal way.

Those opposing such techniques suggest visualization offers nothing more than a placebo would. The placebo effect is the feeling of something positive changing without anything actually changing. This can happen for many reasons. If people are given a medication and told it will cure their disease, they are more likely to realize positive health outcomes whether or not they receive medication or a sugar pill (at least in some cases).

The placebo effect does not happen for everyone, but it might work for you, even if you do not believe in visualizations to boost your immunity. What is the worst thing that can happen? You may end up right where you started, or you may find you feel a thousand times better

Improve Your Immune System

10feb 61PGBjqEzHL._SX398_BO1,204,203,200_Have you thought about how much pressure your body is under these days? When you consider the additives in our food, the chemicals in our drinking water, the pollution in the air we breathe – the list can seem pretty daunting. When we add the pressures of daily living, the emotional and mental stresses that exhaust and fatigue us, we can begin to understand how easily the body can exhibit worrying signs of stress and distress.

One of the more disturbing aspects of modern living is the widespread increase in adrenal stress that is affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. Adrenal stress was more commonly associated with people in middle age but now it’s just as likely to affect people in their teens and early twenties. We have to accept the fact that we are living in highly-stressed times and that things are not getting better. So why is this a problem for our health and wellbeing?

The affects of environmental pollution, food additives, inappropriate food choices and emotional stress can compromise the immune system and leave the body vulnerable to disease, infection, allergies and imbalances in the hormonal and metabolic systems. The result is a reduction in the quality of life, an increase in the possibility of serious disease, an impairment of the mental faculties and a shorter lifespan. I know. It doesn’t make for very pleasant or uplifting reading but our purpose is to flag the potential problems so that you are fully prepared to take the right steps to neutralise them. And the great news is that there’s plenty you can do to improve the situation before the imbalances ever get a chance to challenge your health. And some of the answers are probably growing unnoticed in your garden.

The long and noble traditions of using herbs and natural treatments to assist with health and wellbeing issues has seen a recent and welcome revival as more and more people express their concern about the effects of relying too much on anti-biotics and prescription medication. Herbalists and naturopaths favour prevention more than cure and this holistic approach to fostering better health can go a long way in countering the effects of all forms of stress. If you suffer from insomnia, there are natural herbal supplements you can take that will encourage you to sleep better and enjoy a restful night’s sleep. That’s one simple remedy that can make a substantial difference to the quality of your life and reduce the stresses and pressure that often interfere with the normal working of your immune system.

Learning to relax and unlock the physical tension that often reflects the stresses and frustrations of work and family life can revolutionise your ability to handle stress effectively. This is an entirely natural process that enhances both physical and mental function. It’s also one of the keys to maintaining a healthy and robust immune system.
Nutrition needs to be considered too. Diet will always play an important role in affecting health and we need to eliminate products and substances that may be harmful to our health. This is just common sense but, if we ignore the dietary advice and continue to consume products that provoke intolerances or allergies, we know we will pay the price at some point. It’s so easy to avoid these issues by maintaining a diet of fresh and natural produce, concentrating on food types that support our health and wellbeing and avoiding anything that could cause a problem, either now or in the future.

We may not be able to change the world and make it a less stressful place but we can do so many things to control the way we respond to the daily challenges around us. We can learn to use the most natural ways possible to boost our health and fully appreciate the methods that lend themselves to a calmer, more productive and more enjoyable way of living. It’s your life. Make it the best. You deserve it!

101 Habits For a Leaner New You

Cover page1Serious weight control just got an intelligent boost from the diva of smart dieting, the amazing and age-defying Beran Parry, who’s just launched The 101 Essential Habits for a Leaner New You. This is the culmination of decades of research and investigation, a scalpel-sharp approach to cutting through the nonsense and myth about sustainable weight loss, laying out the essential facts about the way your metabolism works and revealing how to take real control of your body, your health and your wellbeing. This is intelligent weight management from one of the world’s leading experts on smart nutrition. And it’s full of great advice, fabulous food, ground-breaking insights and one hundred and one superb habits to keep you right on track to total wellness.

Effective weight control is so much more than cutting calories and unhealthy starvation diets. It’s about understanding your body’s natural needs and supplying fuel and food that your body can thrive on. And it’s about developing better, healthier habits that can fully support your decision to get into better shape and start enjoying life to the max.

The fact is that we tend to live life on automatic pilot. We shop for groceries in a daze, picking up items that we consume without awareness, sometimes responding to chemical signals from the unbalanced, hostile bacteria in our gut. We eat whilst our minds and attention are distracted by the swarms of thoughts and stresses that make up a typical day. We eat for comfort. We eat to overcome feelings of failure, loneliness and inadequacy. We use food as a convenient tranquiliser to dull the pains of our daily emotional experience. Food has become the most widely abused drug on the planet and many of the familiar foods that you find on the supermarket shelves are quite simply addictive. So the problem of effective weight control is so much more than counting calories. It’s about behaviour. It’s about understanding the way our brains have been conditioned to function over hundreds of thousands of years. We still respond to the powerful drives of the brain’s primitive limbic system, answering the drives and urges of the amygdala with knee-jerk, instant responses that demand immediate gratification. Even though those urges are rarely helpful for our long term health and well being. Fortunately, salvation swoops to the rescue in the form of the more recently-evolved part of the human brain that we know and revere as the pre-frontal cortex. This is where so many addictive behaviours can be challenged, resolved and neutralised.

The pre-frontal cortex is deeply connected to the limbic system’s instant response drives. As the PFC is engaged, the limbic system cools down and reduces its manic grip on our behaviour. As we learn to engage the PFC, we learn step by step to control our habits and responses. We find that we can make better choices. These new habits over-ride the old behaviours and put us back in control of how we react to life. Fascinating research supports the conclusion that many of our eating habits are a result of feeling out of control. In other words, when we experience a particularly strong sense of anxiety – a perfect opening for the limbic system to fire up its ancient drives and urge us to seek instant gratification – we turn to food as a source of comfort. Food, of course, cannot resolve the original problem of anxiety, and eating too much, especially the toxic treats that cause so much damage to our health, triggers further feelings of guilt and remorse that spark yet another cycle of anxiety. It happens all the time. It effects hundreds of millions of people around the world every day. And the successful intervention of the PFC is the most effective way to deal with these behaviours.

The 101 Essential Habits for a Leaner New You celebrates your amazing ability to create meaningful change in your life by choosing the most appropriate food for your body, by eliminating the toxins from your digestive tract and from your shopping list, by learning to make better use of your brain’s incredible capacity to shape your choices, by introducing the best possible habits for total wellbeing. These methods have been applied to a wide variety of addictions. When eating is in any way out of control, we have to recognise a behavioural issue alongside the need to address the quality and quantity of what we put in our stomachs every day. This new level of understanding puts us back in the driving seat of our lives and achieves so much more than an intelligent response to weight control. It encourages us to move beyond the limitations of our fears and anxieties. It shows us that we can live a better life. It proves conclusively that we are no longer the victims of our weight or our circumstances. It opens the door to a new way of life. It reveals the goal of a skinnier, healthier, happier, new you. And you deserve every single ounce of happiness that’s coming your way.

Is it Time to Change Your Doctor?

doc4Doctors. Don’t you love them? But let’s not start by bashing the medical profession! Some of my best and most trusted friends are doctors and I have enormous respect for their knowledge and dedication. The problem, as they’ll freely admit, is that their training is mostly based on research that was conducted decades ago and medicine is notoriously slow to adapt to changes in practices and protocols. And it’s a fast-moving area of concern.

The better doctors are aware of this dilemma and strive to keep up to date with the latest revelations and conclusions that are published from rigourous research and scientific exploration. True, our understanding of the human body is changing, but mainstream medicine is sometimes medieval in its approaches and orthodoxy. That might explain why more people die in the U.S. from prescription medication than from gunshot wounds. You might like to think about that for a moment! doc3

The myths and misconceptions surrounding medical advice often produce harmful recommendations and now, with the support and encouragement of my medical buddies, this seems like a great moment to tip the balance in favour of some good, solid and positively beneficial advice.

Let’s start with diet. If there’s one area in your life where extremism pays the highest dividends – it’s your daily diet. We know that focusing on natural, unprocessed food is the key to reversing countless health problems, extending lifespan and maximising good health and vitality.

The gut seems to hold the key to so many health issues that feeding it with high quality, fresh vegetable produce is the simplest and most effective way to harmonise the body and eliminate the risk of serious illness. It’s that simple.

Losing unwanted weight, reversing chronic diseases, boosting energy levels, rejuvenating the body, staying fit and healthy – all from an intelligent approach to nutrition. That means natural, local, organic and fresh with an emphasis on veggies. It’s one of the most important contributions you can make to your health.

You’ll feel the difference. You’ll see the difference. And people around you will notice the difference too. Spread the word. It’s just too important to ignore.

Next item on the super health agenda is the favourite target of the medical profession – vitamin and mineral supplements. Despite the readiness of doctors to throw prescribed drugs at almost every health problem, regardless of the potentially damaging side effects, many are wildly opposed to taking vitamins.

docYet the evidence is clear that supplements are an extremely effective way to boost health and vitality. We know that there are some areas of confusion but the fact is that a handful of essential nutrients can work wonders in promoting cellular health, metabolising food and assisting in enzyme reactions.

And yes – my dear doctor friends all take supplements and recommend them to friends and family every single day. Because they work.

The third area on our pathway to total health that truly deserves a complete overhaul is our attitude towards sleep. The fact is that too few people either sleep well or get enough sleep. And that’s scary. It’s partly our culture and our manic reliance on electronic communication devices that keeps us awake at night, over-stimulated and stressed, far too active and restless, that’s ends us scurrying to the medicine cabinet and a prescription to help us sleep or relax.

Of course, the dear doctor doesn’t mention that even taking fewer than 18 sleeping pills a year increases the risk of dying by threefold. Increase the number of pills consumed and the risk of death increases fivefold! Didn’t your doctor mention that when they wrote out the prescription? Must’ve forgotten! doc7

So how do we deal with poor sleep? Firstly, say No to the sleeping pills. They’re not to resolve your problem. Abolish all electronic devices from the bedroom. No reading and no TV. That’s right. You need to rest. You need to sleep. Turn down the temperature and get rid of all those little blue electric lights that flash and glow on your bedside clock and electronic devices. Breathe more deeply. Relax every muscle in your body. Tell yourself calmly and firmly that you’re going to sleep wonderfully well and wake up feeling fantastically refreshed. Calm down. Get comfortable. Slip into a deeply restorative sleep.

There are countless examples of pioneering doctors facing ridicule as they challenged the prevailing orthodoxy of their day and offered evidence for revolutionary breakthroughs in medical knowledge and understanding.

doc1The problem is that too many medical practitioners are trapped in outdated approaches to human health and frequently offer well-intentioned advice that is breaking the first principle of medicine – do no harm. Heed the best advice and follow the latest research.

Stay with us and we’ll share the exciting news on the latest breakthroughs and developments. It’s your health. It’s your life. And you deserve the best.
